It was one of those fall-ish types of day. The kind that Mother Nature was unsure how to dress. The sky was lit with sunshine and the air soaked with warmth. Normally, my husband and I would head for the beach but Sunday was a day for my annual autumn walk in the woods by the lake.
Worried about bugs biting, my husband and I dressed in fall-ish attire. While inching closer to the walking trail, we saw a band of young soccer players and their families parading toward us in shorts. Perhaps, they thought us odd all covered up when it was warm in the park.
Enjoying the day, we started our exploration by choosing the main footpath. Shortly after the Sunday walk, my husband decided to deviate toward the shoreline. It was there that the lapping sounds of the lake became audible the closer I inched toward the water. Ripples gently hit the shore giving me the same rush of emotion felt when ocean waves sweep against the shore and the jetties. All was peacefully calm at the lake. With iPhone in hand, I documented the journey. You can see the short video, Stepping Into Autumn, below that led to the creation of a YouTube video.
Upon returning home, I carefully took out from the bag the autumn artifacts that I collected on the trail. Golden and ruby leaves, adjoining acorns, a piece of weathered wood, wildflowers and bittersweet were interspersed among my ornamental items creating a festive display.
With a spirit of gratitude for the abundant bounty of this season, I stepped into autumn and smiled with contentment.
While creating a fall-ish look for my home, I am determined to finish designing my #EmbraceableSummer Global Gallery of Artistic Expressions for viewing on social media. In the meantime, you can peruse the travel log comprised of gorgeous photos from around the world that I shared when I hosted Poetry Friday last week.

I love how you brought bits of autumn back with you and how you captured the glory of the season in the video. These scenes, this time of year, make a person glad to be alive. For me there's a tinge of loss as summer leaves, so your inclusion of Thaxton's quote on eternal summer in the grateful heart was EXACTLY what I needed today! And as always, your art makes my spirit sing. :)
ReplyDeleteFran, I woke to your poem that is a beautiful blending of thoughts moving me from summer to fall. Then, opened my post to find your comment that made me smile and fill my heart with peaceful thoughts. My Sunday walk allowed me to ease into fall with pleasure. The serenity of the lapping water against shore was the just right transitional symbol. I'm off to find the goodness of fall now. (BTW: I hope your husband is feeling better.)
DeleteI liked how you pointed out the clothes. Fall is that time when it is hard to know how to dress. Can be chilly yet warm with the sun. I especially liked the video showing the wind on the water. The ripples allowed me to feel the breezy. Thanks for sharing your words and images!
ReplyDeleteSally, my husband and I were amazed how warm it was at the entrance of the woods and then, a soft, gentle breeze cooled the woods. If we had beach chairs we would have sat near the shore just looking out into the water in quiet peace.
DeleteYour art is incredible. I love how you mix and integrate and layer so many mediums. This is missing in writing workshop - we need to broaden our definition of writing. Maybe expressing... thank you for the beautiful space you created for us today.
ReplyDeleteClare, thank you so much for your kind words. They are the spark that I needed to ignite. I had a conversation with Kelly at Stenhouse last NCTE about sending in my thoughts related to my work. Unfortunately, time has slipped by to develop my idea. Expressive writing is needed especially now in troubled times. Mixing digital and nondigital writing is something I explored with graduate students/Secondary English teachers this summer to bring their students' writing to a new level. I am ready to explore my ideas further. Thanks for the nudge.
DeleteBewitched by fall beauty - I can relate to this. I always know to find enchanting words and pictures on your blog. No matter what my day is like, coming here always nurtures my soul.
ReplyDeleteTerje, If you can believe this-my husband got involved with this quote. I asked him to advise me on the design of the digital. He did and said make it more brilliant. He also thought a pun on words would help-thus leaves came up. Next, "Add fascinated". I replied, "I need something more exciting but synonymous." "Bewitching, that's it." I said. A joint venture that was meant to be. Thanks for commenting and making me feel proud of the work I accomplished.
