Game On!

When growing up board games were a favorite pastime, a "conduit" bonding families and friends together. Children learned the etiquette of fair play while playing board games. Many memories were made in the good old days.

When we moved from Long Island to Virginia a couple of years ago, our “forever” board games, chess, monopoly, scrabble, and checkers, moved with us. Now, they sit on a table in the loft waiting for my little grandgirls to visit. While this generation is absorbed in video games, board games are still appealing as a leisurely family and friends activity.

What new games are in my house and enjoyed by my grandgirls and me? Tic Tac Toe, WordScapes, and Wordle are all online. My iPhone and my son's iPad await their turns with the little champs. For a solo game, I enjoy the New York Times Wordle. I found tips that are quite useful but in the end, it is all about strategy, vocabulary know-how, and persistence.

  1. Board games are fun. My daughter told me her children love them. I am sure you will have a wonderful time at the Poetry party. It will be nice to know more about the experience.

  2. Hoping my comment shows up. For some reason Word Press is not letting me comment. I loved your reflection on board games. Game's On is a perfect capture of a grandma and a grandgirl delightful play. Our 7 year old grandson likes to play Sorry.

    1. Thanks, Ramona. I never played Sorry. I will need to look that up. March 19's Slice is about baking with Aurora.

  3. Your elfchen on Wordle is fun and so true! I do miss board games and love when my kids come and we play. Wordle is a daily treat!

  4. Carol, as kids we ad a ton of board games ranging from Candy Land and Uncle Wiggily to Life and Mousetrap. Scrabble was a staple. The way some games are played may have changed, but the skills they teach haven't. Have fun playing games wit your granddaughters. Bob

    1. I have Candyland for the girls. That one is fun. Teh 4 -year-old is with us for the weekend so maybe that will be our fun treat beside baking.

  5. I discovered a Monopoly card game recently at my son’s. It was really fun and moves fast. It was fun and you might like it, a different version of the game. My husband is a wordle player. Every day first thing!

    1. Janice, the Monopoly card game sounds fun. I am going to check on Amazon. Thanks. I didn't try Wordle today because my 4-year-old grandchild is with us for the weekend. I'll check it out today and see if I can beat the computer again.

  6. Great post, Carol! I especially love your "heart note" poem. I never get bored of board games or card games. Here in Switzerland, we learned a new one - SkipBo. It's great because you can play with 6 people (over the holidays when my daughters and their BF's visited) or just 2 (just me and my hubs). :)

    1. Bridget, I have to look for SkipBo. Janice said there is a Monopoly card game now. I am looking for that also.

  7. Hooray for board games! Your Wordle and "Game On" poems are delightful. Thank you for sharing!

  8. My family is a board game family. I have to admit that some of the new games my daughters bring to the table are sometimes too complicated for me. Fortunately they are willing to play my favourites like Alias and Dixit.

    1. Terje, I do not know the two games that you play. I am finding that directions for many products now seem complicated. I always go back to the thought that directions do not take into account that they need more information and photos than what is provided.

  9. Playing board games have been one of the best things I got my nephews into when they were wee, and now that they're teens, it's the one thing that will get them to stay longer than five minutes after eating dinner. We have elevated the bickering, trash-talking, boasting and giggles into more than just a pasttime, and it's turned into a way to love each other.

AM A BIT ENVIOUS OF YOUR WORDLE, THOUGH!!! I play Merriam-Webster's Quordle sometimes, and I'm basically terrible, but I love trying! Here's to a can-do spirit, right?

  10. We are board-game people, too, Carol -- and I love that our kids continue to be. Can't wait to share them with our grand!

  11. My grand-girls & I played Uno & Sorry endlessly earlier in their lives, Carol. Now, when on overnights together, they help me to the Spelling Bee. I do Wordle at night, my end-of-day challenge. When my kids were young & at home, we played Risk & Monopoly. I love that you have a game set-up in your home for fun play, & the elfchen, "can do spirit" for Wordle, just right! Have a great weekend!

  12. Carol, I love board games. I'll look forward to being able to play with my going on two-year-old grandson, but, in the meantime, I do have some other family who love to play games whenever they are over. I like Wordle too and Worldle on line.

  13. I just recently started playing Wordle. I'm trying hard not to get too caught up in keeping my streak. I just do my best and what happens happens!

    1. Mary Lee, before this streak with the NYTimes, I played Wordle with another online board and had more loses than wins. Then, I watched strategist YouTube videos. I have to admit it is fun but I just started also.

  14. Fabulous! I have so many great memories of board games from childhood. Kids today really don't know the fun of them.

  15. Our family likes to play games together also, Carol, though my grands are older than yours and I can barely keep up at times. It is fun, though, and I have laughed til my sides hurt. I'm a Wordl-er also, and recently a friend introduced me to Connections on NYT. Good to do it with hubby. Good luck, & thanks!

    1. Karen, you are third person to recommend Connections. I am going there now.

  16. Wordle and Connections for me! It's actually part of my morning routine after morning pages and reading and/or writing poetry. My grands have enjoyed playing Sorry! when they visit. Thanks for this fun post, Carol.

    1. Rose, Laura just told me about Connections also. It looks like I will check it out soon. We never played Sorry but Ramona recommended it also for a good game for the grands. Thanks for joining me last weekend.

  17. Awwww, these are wonderful. Board games, card games, and word games are a way of life for us. Last night, family was over, and we played Push, Oh Fruck, Five Crowns, and Sour Apples to Apples. Randy and I are headed to breakfast soon, where we'll play Scrabble and chat. Oh--and for a new digital game, please try Connections, also at NYT. It's a word sorting game, and I am utterly addicted to it.

    1. I do love word sorting games and will try out the one you mentioned. Laura, I am so excited that your Oskar book arrived. I see Sierra on Friday when she reads one of the Stations of the Cross at the Church Service for Lent. She is excited because she is a fluent reader and this is an honor. I can't wait to show her your book and your message to her. Many thanks!
