Thought to Live By_SOLSC 12

News blasts shout out alarming reports of the spread of the coronavirus. Two phone calls come in with cancellations of appointments and yoga classes. Life replays like the young adult dystopian novel, Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. Where is the world heading? It is time to ponder the present and find some semblance of peace in an unfamiliar world.

Each year since March 2015, I have engaged in Two Writing Teacher's Annual Slice of Life Story Challenge. Slicing allows me to ponder life, literacy, and learning, capturing small moments poetically through writing, photography, and digital art. Welcome to Day 12 of 31 days of writing with Two Writing Teachers.

  1. Stay well, Carol. Practice yoga at home. Be like the cat in that cute photo: hunker down. You are not alone, although I think we all feel a bit that way, in your worries.

    1. Glenda. that cat is one of the feral cats that visit our neighborhood. My neighbor has been feeding it during the cold winter and now my meditation garden seems to be its resting place. We all need to find our resting place at this time. For 4 days my literacy association has been back and forth on whether to hold our literacy conference with Ralph Fletcher and Torrey Maldonado next week. Last night it was officially postponed. Sad that we live in these troubled times.

    1. I am so glad that I found the book on the internet because it still haunts me today. I used it for a summer reading choice at the SHS. Long Island is going crazy with coronavirus news, bulletins, cancellations. Even our literacy conference that we worked on for a year is being postponed. Thanks for dropping in, Laura.

  4. We all need to take a deep calming breath. I just had to cancel our retired school employees meeting for next week. The church where we hold it is stopping all activities for the time being. Hopefully we can get get back to normal soon.

Love the picture. That cat has a calmness we all need.

    1. I agree that we all need a calmness. Hopefully, by the time life is brought back to "normalcy" we all learned "life lessons".

  5. I've thought a lot about the role writing will play in my life as we engage in the reality of social distancing... and the role it will/can play for our students as they process huge shifts in their daily routines.

    1. It is difficult to believe that social distancing is a real "thing" especially when we have been talking about about collaborating, communicating and developing creative critical thinkers, Lisa. Thanks for joining me here tonight.

  6. Carol, I want you to let me know when your conference gets rescheduled. I've never heard Ralph Fletcher speak and it's on my bucket list! New York is a long way to travel, but who knows? I do check his scheduled events periodically hoping for an appearance on the West coast. I'm glad to have my slicer friends' support as we navigate this new time. "Find your spot. Hunker down." Thanks for your wise words today.

    1. Ramona, it would be worth a trip to hear Ralph Fletcher. I got to at AllWrite a few years ago. That time has inspired writing and writing lessons many times since then.

    2. We have a proposed date of May 29th. Ralph Fletcher already said that he can present on that date. Now we just have to wait to see if the coronavirus scare is not a problem as it is now. The conference is on Long Island.

  7. Madness, right? We are now closed for one week, possibly two. I just want to curl up like a cat. Wake me when it's over!

    1. Life is topsy turvy for sure, Christie. We need to keep calm during this trying time. The cat seems to know how to do this.

    1. Diane, is the closure in other districts in northern Virginia? This afternoon problems escalated here. Broadway is going dark. Museums are closing; talk shows are not letting audiences. Imagine all of that???
