Just Tired

Have you ever been so exhausted that you nod off with your computer in your lap? This has happened to me too many times. I think back to my last cataract surgery. A bit too much anesthesia was the culprit. I continue to wonder what causes my exhaustion and all of a sudden I nod off. About thirty minutes later, I woke up too late to meet the deadline for submission to the Tuesday Slice of Life at Two Writing Teachers but I decided to write anyways since my mind was racing and it is Cataract Awareness Month.

TIRED EYES

There is never enough time to savor the fullness of life.

It (time) slips away from me as I write,

Retreating into the netherworld.

Energy-sapping motion

Depletes my tank-

Edging me closer to

Yet another night of

Edgy

Sleep.

Now, I need to reprogram my thoughts so I can go back to sleeping and hopefully not wake up until the morning. Good night!

Thank you Two Writing Teachers and Amy Ellerman for adding the above quote tonight.

  1. Carol, time does seem to slip away from us. Is it because our minds are racing and time is gone before we know it? Is it because we have so many thing going on at the same time all vying for our attention that we don't always know where to focus our attention? My tired eyes always seem to hit between 1 PM and 2 PM when I am enjoying a cup of coffee and doing the daily sudoku. I just nod off. Hope you got a good night's sleep.

    1. Bob, it is good to know that others have tired eyes too. I just came back from the eye specialist and he said that I am healing nicely. He also dropped one of my eye drop meds. Thanks for stopping by.

    1. Yes, sleep is essential. I needed to cancel my yoga and stretch and pump classes this week so I can sleep longer in the mornings. Thanks for stopping by. I love your photos at your slice, especially the one with the moored boat. I added it to my online global Poetryliscious Gallery padlet at https://padlet.com/cvarsalona/q1uymnafyupx3w8c because I loved it so much. Thanks for the photos you take.

  3. I love the way the formatting of this stanza parallels its meaning:

    Edging me closer to
    Yet another night of
    Edgy
    Sleep.

The way the lines begin long at the beginning of the poem and then shorten by the end imitates the way that tiredness creeps up on us until that moment we are just done. Well crafted, Carol!

    1. Amy, while I created the format so it fit my thoughts, I appreciate your take on the format showing how tiredness creeps up on us.

  4. Carol, Covid has done it to me. I can't sleep much even though I am tired. This morning I woke up at 4:30 AM. I've had anesthesia once for surgery and someone told me for every hour you were under, it takes a month to recover. Give yourself time. I'm glad you wrote honestly. It is brave to write from a place of vulnerability.

    1. Yikes, one month for each hour-I am having a colonoscopy this month so I will have to gauge how long it takes me to recoup. Just found your response. Thanks.
