Fourth of July 2022 Memories

The 4th of July is always a festive event. Baking, enjoying time with family, having barbecues, and watching fireworks are traditional expectations. This year brought another set of photos and great memories.

hands steady
picnic treats
frosted sweets
outdoor fun
children run
flags waving
songs playing
evening sky
Fourth of July
cheers, applauding
sparklers soaring
celebration
our proud nation

The above poem was written after reading Fran Haraway's poem, The Fourth of July Parade.

The Fourth of July Parade

Stripes and stars,
Antique cars,
Pretty girls,
Baton twirls,
Spangled gowns,
Friendly clowns,
Smiling folks,
Papered spokes,

You can read the rest of the short poem at the Poetry Foundation.

The following poem was written for Slice of Life Tuesday at Two Writing Teachers. My blog post, Firework Magic, shares more digitized photos of Fireworks 2022 in Reston Virginia.

dart into evening sky
pop, whizz, sizzle
like popcorn kernels bursting
showstopper entertainment

    1. I really liked the mentor text and it was a great model for me. Thanks for commenting, Mary Lee. Enjoy the day. There is sunshine today so it will be fun to go outdoors.

  4. This poem form deserves a name--it's artfully used by you and everyone from LBH to Marilyn Singer to Julie Abery in https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/55277848-sakamoto-s-swim-club. We didn't observe the 4th this year--we were in France and raised a glass of ordinary Monday champagne (my FIL is quite the connoisseur), and I have to say I didn't miss all the fuss this year! I guess I was pretty exhausted. Glad you enjoyed.

    1. Heidi, thank you for your generous comment and the references. What could the format be called? Thinking about that. I plan on trying it out again with different topics. Enjoy your trip and the champagne-a favorite drink of mine.

  5. Great poems! I have to admit, since I was a kid, I have thought of the 4th of July as a part of MY birthday celebration which I happen to share with the country. :)

  6. Both of your poems capture the experience of a fourth of July celebration. I love the use of onomatopoeia in the second poem: pop, whizz, sizzle - the words pop and sizzle off of the page. Thanks for sharing these this week!

    1. I have been a lover of onomatopoeia since I learned of the format in high school, Elisabeth. There is something special about adding sounds to writing.

  7. Ta da! Such an entrance your poetry and photos make...love the parade feeling of this arrangement. Can I turn the clock back to the Fourth? Summer is moving a bit too fast for me. But, I did enjoy a dip in the pool yesterday. Yummy treats!

    1. Linda, I think of you enjoying your vacation every time I pass the middle school near my community. Thanks for stopping here and commenting with a new idea, a parade of thoughts and photos. Fourth of July seems so long ago. Enjoy the light show outside. It is amazing.
