Bless Our Pets

Summer floats on heated air with temperatures rising to 100 degrees this year. I remember similar dog days of summer in Central New York when I was a child. My home was not airconditioned but just right for a cold garden hosing and a good book.

Poetry found me early in life. Authors, like the beloved poet Lee Bennett Hopkinsbrought joy to avid readers like myself. He urged us to remember:

"There shouldn't be a day without poetry."

When learning that Eerdmans Publishing Co. would publish Bless Our Pets -Poems of Gratitude for Our Animal Friends, one of Lee's last children's books in April 2024, I was delighted to review the book. Bless Our Pets is a sweet, tender book filled with fourteen poems about different kinds of animal pets written by celebrated poets.

At the beginning of the book the fabulous illustrator, Lita Judge, dedicates
Bless Our Pets To all the critters who share their love with us.

Are you intrigued by the beautiful artwork and the fact that Lee Bennett Hopkins continued toward the end of his life still creating and honoring the gift of poetry? As Charles Egita said, "Lee is and always will be 'The Pied Piper of Poetry' ." The poem, Kitten, begins the anthology and ends with a two-page spread poem about Lee's pet, My Old Dog.

Bless Our Pets is noted as a celebration of creatures.
Your eyes are lantern-bright,
round as chestnuts,
We grow together
watching over every tiny part.
I pray you retain some essential wildness.
I wish you safe, curled in my arm.
Place your paws upon my thumb,
your breath warm upon my fingertips.
I'm grateful for the endless joy you bring so
I pet you until dinner.
Thank you for inviting me.
I'll always be here to take care of you
You've earned your rest. You've been the best.
Let's cherish the many wondrous times we have together.

************************
Lee Bennett Hopkins created this wonder-filled book with love as did his group of poet writers. Each poem is crafted with language suitable for 4-8 year-old children. The art work is amazing, vibrant, and realistic. Students will enjoy not only reading this book but trying to write their own poem about a pet animal. Some children may enjoy created art work to accompany their poem. Perhaps, Bless Our Pets will be an opening lesson in a Creative Writing / Literacy station this fall.

************************
Teachers, librarians, and parents, please find  a special spot this summer to read through this gem of a poetry book. I know that Lee must be filled with joy to have this book available for little and big readers. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

I am joining the Poetry Friday Roundup hosted by my friend, Margaret Simon, who will surely use this book in her classes that are starting in two weeks. I look forward to seeing some of the original poems that her gifted students will create. Perhaps, there are some artists that will share their talent also.

Just "Be" in Spring's Presence

Nature is always inviting you to see her beauty and power.
She is attracting you with her dance, song, and love.
- Author, Debasish Mridha

With the art of storytellers, Springsation poets paint a tranquil museum-like walk through the early part of the Spring season. If you travel to the Springsations Gallery of Artistic Expressions Vol. 2. Padlet you will see a showcase of springtime artistry. As you move mindfully through the gallery breathe, rejoice, and "be" centered in the serenity of spring. Pause, gaze, and let nature mystify you with her endless color palettes, dazzling landscape, and poetic goodness.

Spring photos were captured by  Diane Anderson, Ramona Behnke, Leigh Anne Eck,
Bob Hamera, Jone Rush MacCulloch, Linda Mitchell, Lou Piccolo, Carol Varsalona

After you take a gallery walk through Springsations Gallery of Artistic Expressions Vol. 2. Padlet, read the Cento, collage poem, below. It was created by lifting lines from each of the image poems written by an amazing group of poets who grace the Gallery.

~Just BE In Spring's Presence~

Open your senses to Earth's beauty.
Follow a flower's fluttered edges.
Her morning song,
Spring's first act,
mounts translucent music
and envelops me in marvelment
as hummingbirds fly on high.
Spring Scoop:
Mother Sun hovers.
Dandelion fluff launches skyward.
A bee crawls inside while
daffodils lift their thirsty heads.
Spring's new beginnings
flutter in hearts,
vaporizing,
peering up into the heavens.
Behold the cycle of life.
 From wayward, wind-caught seedlings,
sunshine buds whisper.
Bare branches banish winter
and announce spring forsythias.
Muddy browns retreat.
Fresh white is in sight.
Trails wind through.
Planes embroider
white criss-cross stitches.
Be present in these movements.
Springsations echo,
awakening splendor.
Reflect on Nature's blessings,
her magic in small moments.
Spread hope, kindness, and love
that our world needs!
Open May's door,
cracked just enough,
to give those caught in Spring
a glimpse of Summer green.

Nature will continue to showcase her beauty this month of May in song, dance, poetry, and photos. If inclined you can add more image poems or other artistic expressions to the Springsations Gallery Padlet. I hope you enjoyed the unveiling of the Springsations Gallery. I applaud all the poets who joined me to praise the beauty of Spring.

Please take a peek at Springsations Gallery Vol. 1. You may see one of your artistic expressions in that gallery from 2017. Thank you for perusing both galleries.

For more poetic goodness, please visit this week's Poetry Friday's host, Janice Scully, at her blog, Salt City Verse. She is reviewing books by two of my favorite children's book writers, Laura Purdie Salas and Charles Ghigna. She also has a poem about the weather that has been changing quite a bit this spring. Janice also is one of the Springsations poets.

Autumn Arrives

There she was immersed in sunlight just waiting for the warm breeze to move her onward. Hiding in the brush, she was caught between the end of bright summer days and the first breaths of autumn. I spotted her among the bushes and thriving flora along the trail.

Some wildflowers of soft yellow and bright purple stood tall in anticipation of Mother Nature's entrance. Sunset was not yet upon the scene, so the tiny visitor was easy to spot. Alongside the trail was her large counterpart, a unique token of autumn.

Fresh and untouched, two leaves, different in structure and color found their home along the creek, pausing for a short stay in the afternoon warmth. I chose the larger one to create a bouquet for my front porch, a tribute to Mother Nature's changing of the guard when the sky darkens earlier.

There comes a day each September when you wake up and know the summer is over and fall has arrived - Ann Rinaldi, writer

Soon the leaves will fall and drift by my window.

Autumn Arrives

Shorter and shorter now the twilight clips.
The sunset hangs on a cloud.
Now watch this Autumn that arrives in smells.
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Falling from the autumn tree.
Be close to the trees
As they whisper together.
The first winds of autumn,
A golden storm of glittering sheaves,
Of fair and frail and fluttering leaves
Sing a song of seasons!

Farewell Summer 2022

Welcome to the Poetry Friday Roundup!

Join me as I pause for a  brief poetic tribute to Summer 2022.

Under a painted sky,
Ornamental grass sways in the breeze.
Summer enrobes in vivid florals
And night noises rise.
Nature celebrates halcyon days
In a tapestry of dewdrops and shifting sands.
Summer waits for its seasonal transition.
Farewell, Sweet Summer!

For you listening pleasure:

Below is a cento (or collage poem) that is composed entirely of lines from other poems by other poets.

Summer has clothed the earth.
The still air stirred at touch of the faint breeze.
I see it as it looked one afternoon.
Gently, I stir a white feather fan.
Shine on, O moon of summer.
Wanderer moon smiling (as)
The frail white stars moved slowly over the sky.
With day-break and the morning hills behind,
A summer sound repeated in summer without end
And I should like so much to play.
