The Doorway Effect

Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why you walked into it?  I am one person who does this many times a day. My Poetry Friday friend, Donna Smith, sent a Facebook message and a reel that explored the topic of forgetting, and the importance of spoken words. Click the Facebook message above and listen to Kyle Cox's quick reel. Thank you, Donna, for sharing the Doorway Effect

What's the fix for walking into a room and forgetting what you are looking for? According to Kyle Cox verbal tagging is key. Here is another reel by Kyle with an additional fix.  Click here

I'm ready. Before walking into a room, I will say out loud why I am entering. For instance, I left my room with several piles of paper. The electric heater was on. When I came back to continue working, I found the heater on because I forgot. At least I remembered that I had paperwork to do.

Since I read Donna's Facebook message, I have been reading as much as I can about the doorway effect. I am going to try the tips. Hopefully, I will remember why I enter a room, rather than just staring dumbfounded.

Laugh for the Day

What do you think about the doorway effect?

Is it a reality for you?

  1. Carol, I hadn’t heard this term before but do try to remind myself while on the way why I’m headed where I’m headed. It’s easy for mind clutter to get in the way of what we need to do.,That said, I do go up and down the stairs when I forget, so more steps, right??

    1. Glenda, mind clutter is a serious issue, Last night, I said that I would go to bed early then, I realized I "had to do" one more thing before a morning call came in. 1/2 hour later struggling to find the paper I needed for the call so I went to sleep which then led to a nightmare. How strange.

Thanks for passing on this idea. I TRY to “have a place for everything”- but who am I kidding, I am not that organized at all! I’ll try this!

    1. Diane, it is good to know that other creative friends are also not organized. After trying to organize there is always more to do. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I didn't know there's a way to push through said doorways. Thanks for the info! I sliced about this as well a few years ago. It's fun to poke around to read all the research studies. It's definitely normal and not an effect of "getting old." Whew!

    1. Yes, there were times of thinking that I was losing my memory. I guess everything comes with aging. I remember through visual cues so I am going to be more aware of where I place items of necessity.

  5. Carol, this is new to me but it sure makes sense. I will try it and I will tell Kathy about it as well. I wonder if this works for grocery shopping as well. It I don’t take a list with me I always end up forgetting something. Bob
