In the depths of my dreams,
I stop somewhere waiting for you.
Roaring winds whip across snowpiled
areas. I feel your warmth rekindling
flames of fire. Then, quickly
in the corners of darkness,
I awaken, waiting for you.
Sadly, on this cold winter night,
you are no longer here beside me.
Softly, like a dancing snowflake,
I whisper, "I shall not stop waiting
for you in my dreams."

Join me at Susan Thomsen's blog, Chicken Spaghetti, for the Poetry Friday Roundup. Susan is hosting this weekend, so she invited everyone to write a poem inspired by a prompt from David Lehman. The poem should start with the final line of Whitman's "Song of Myself", I stop somewhere waiting for you. Susan added her own poem, "Flurries of Winter" for our reading pleasure.

Carol,
ReplyDeleteYour use of the line from Whitman as a message to Richard is so poignant. This: "I feel your warmth rekindling flames of fire." Wow. Peace. Thank you for participating.
This line sets the stage: "winds whip across snowpiled areas." Then you show us two scenes, the warm one and the cold one, but you are still graceful in your waiting, Carol, in your dreaming.
ReplyDeleteWaiting in dreams...sigh. So relatable. Thank you, Carol. xo
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, heartfelt and poignant, Carol. Love the last three lines especially.
ReplyDeleteThere is beautiful feelings of hope shown in your poem, Carol, so loving the moments you will find. The ups & downs surround yet the ending takes over, the blessing found! Hugs for you this weekend!

ReplyDeleteCarol, this is beautiful and somewhere in the universe, your husband received it. Have you thought of a collection of poems?
ReplyDeleteCarol, this is so vulnerable and moving. Thank you for sharing your grief in such a relatable way.
ReplyDeleteOh Carol, yes, waiting for you in dreams. I feel that longing in your poem.
ReplyDeleteAh, Carol, I was waiting to read a poem by someone who was writing from loss of a loved one and waiting to be with them again. Beautiful and sad, but still hopeful in a way. I also let my mind slip to the passing of my Dad (almost a year ago now). I have not yet tried the prompt but am inspired by all of you. Thanks (and hugs).
ReplyDelete"in the corners of darkness" - beautiful, Carol, and so full of love. Thank you for inviting us into your dreams.
