There’s nothing like a relaxing beach vacation to nurture my summer soul. The lull of the sea, the beauty of clouds billowing in the sky, and the warm sand bring me back to my happy place. Let me take you along on a visual journey to Cape May, America's oldest seaside resort.
Imagine the wind blowing in your hair as the ferry cruises across the Delaware Bay. Riders find railings to watch the seagulls circulate overhead as the seafoam surfaces below. After landing, people travel into the historic town by the sea, filled with vibrant Painted Ladies, and Victorian houses, proudly displaying their architectural beauty with gingerbread trim and multiple colors that mostly date back to the late 18oos. A quick sightseeing tour can take you to the beach where magnificent mansions face the ocean.
During our summer holiday, we listen to the sound of lapping waves rushing toward the shoreline, the giggling sounds of children, including my little grandgirls, chasing approaching waves in the sand. We watch swooping seagulls circle in toward the beach. My granddaughter shares her excitement as she spots a dolphin's fin pop up in the distance. I notice hot air balloons floating across the sky with their rider. Life is tranquil at the beach bringing a feeling of serenity. There is a sweet mix of beaching, boating, eating gourmet dinners and delicious breakfast foods, and pleasurable leisure time. The sunsets are magnificent and the ice cream stores are delicious. Cape May is the place where every member of the family can enjoy life. I certainly did as I spent time soaking in the sights and relaxing.
Today is Poetry Friday and Dave is hosting for the very first time with an etheree poem. He adds an interesting statement at the end of his blog. "To me, poetry has been my way of finding castles among the ordinary things and even making ordinary things stick out like castles." I am now joining him and other poets at Dave's blog here.
Carol, Cape May is one of my favorite places and you captured it perfectly. Thank you for taking me along on your journey! I can smell those sea breezes and hear your grandgirls’ giggles.
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew your identity so we can chat further about Cape May.
DeleteDon't know why that came up anonymous. It's Rose Cappelli. I always said I wanted to be at the beach in September after I retired, so for several years I did just that - stole away to Cape May for a few days by myself. I'm thinking of going for a day this fall since it's just a two hour drive for me.
DeleteThanks Rose for letting me know that you stopped by. I always wanted to go to Victorian Christmas in Cape May. Fall is a wonderful time to visit. Most of the shops are open and the weather is usually delightful at the beach. A two-hour trip is just the right amount of driving.
DeleteYou know how much I love the ocean, Carol. Your time on Cape May looks and sounds awesome. Love those painted ladies, too. When I first read the intro, I thought you were writing about butterflies. Love this "other" species, too!
ReplyDeleteI can see why butterflies came into your mind, Linda. I have been in love with the Victorian period for decades and subscribed to a magazine that made me fall in love with Cape May. I am happy to say that this trip was the best of all of our travels to Cape May.
DeleteLook at you at the beach! What a lucky girl you are. The painted ladies are lovely. Say hello to them for me.
ReplyDeleteNow we are back home, Linda, doing mundane chores. Memories of the beach keep me going. I am trying to finish my last swap and write a few more poems for special people. Have a great weekend.
DeleteI think your best ever, Perfect to relax, rejuvenate, Calming,
ReplyDeleteI am not sure who signed in as anonymous but thank you for your comment.
DeletePerhaps Anonymous is you, Rita Wirtz, because it sounds familiar after reading your comment to me on Twitter. Family is important and so are days of relaxation. I am still breathing in beach air and filling my body with calmness.
DeleteI have always wanted to go to Cape May. Thank you for the virtual trip! What a nice haiku you have to go along with your pictures.
ReplyDeleteThanks for enjoying your virtual trip of Cape May, Susan. It is a marvelous and peaceful place to soak in nature's beauty.
DeleteCarol, what loveliness here today. I have been to Ocean City, NJ, and my sister talks a lot about her family vacations in Cape May, so I have a tiny inkling of the joy you experienced. Thanks for sharing all the beauty and good memories, as well as your sweet poems. Those Victorian houses, proud as peacocks, are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteDenise, Cape May is a town unlike others on the Jersey shore. It brings me back to another era but with modern amenities. The smell of the sea is so calming and the ebb and flow of the tide reminds me that life moves back and forth constantly. Thank you for sharing the experience with me.
DeleteCape May is such a wonderful town! We celebrated my son's first birthday there as we sailed from Baltimore toward our new life in Maine. Your post brings back so many memories. I'm so glad you enjoyed a lovely summer vacation there.
ReplyDeleteMolly, your early year memories are tied to Cape May in such a lovely way. We have one more overnight vacation to the Chesapeake Shore to celebrate my son's birthday with the family. Seeing the ocean last week was a blessing that I will never forget.
