Summer Passes By

As the calendar turns its page to the middle of September, the weather moves forward between two seasons. There are beautiful summer days and summer rains with damp weather but this past week in Northern Virginia widespread thunderstorms and cool weather were the norm. It was jacket and raincoat weather due to 60-degree weather. Then, all of a sudden the temperature climbed up and the humidity went down. It felt like a combo of the summer season and early fall.

While summer knows its boundaries, nature decided to play between the two seasons. Summer days lessened. William Shakespeare stated, "Summer's lease hath all too short a date." Will Summer pass by us as Fall decides to make a grand entrance with her royal carpet of leave?  Will Summer hold on or graciously pass the baton to Autumn for the beginning of the Fall event? Here is my haiku sequence.

summer holds on
knowing what will come next
change approaches

summer pauses
feels the seasonal pressure
time is precious

summer steps in
a chance to shine is needed
fall winks takes its turn

As Summer transitions into Fall, I picture a gallery of artistic expressions created.

Invitation to All

Summering is a state of mind that brings feelings of joy and relaxation. It revolves around the best of summertime and the ability to savor those feelings year-round.

I invite poets, writers, photographers, and educators to consider using this prompt to create an image poem, inspirational quote, or a photograpy on: How do you engage in summering during the summer season? Do you have a special photo, piece of artwork and/or poem to add to the Summering Mini-Gallery that I will create.

Thank you to Mary Lee Hahn and Janet Fagal for participating with their image poems on summering. You can send your offerings to cvarsalona@gmail.com by October 3, 2025. I  will gather the artistic expressions and create the mini-gallery.

I am delighted to send this invitation forth to the fabulous book reviewer, baker,  and literary buff, Jama at Jama's Alphabet Soup.

Inquiry: Is anyone attending the NCTE Convention in Denver this November. I am interested in rooming with someone. Please let me know if your are going and planning on sharing a room. Thank you, friends and a special thank you to Matt Forrest Esenwine for asking me to present with his team of Georgia Heard  and Allan Wolf.

  1. Carol, this is a lovely haiku sequence. September weathers feels a bit like a seesaw right now, with cool days and then temperatures in the high 80s. I can't wait for fall to officially take hold.

    3. Thanks Tricia, I am delighted that you were Miss Anonymous. Blogger is strange lately, I agree. Fall came here and it was cool with an overcast sky. I feel good that I spent some time decorating my home before the magic date occurred. Enjoy Autumn!

    1. Thanks, Linda for your comment. I look forward connecting with you. I hope you can go to the Poetry Meet-up in Denver. Are you close to the Convention Center. I also look forward to your summering offering. Have a great weekend. This one is jam-packed for me but it is with family and that is a great gift.

  3. I hope you get to NCTE! I just love conferences and my friends from all around the nation. I'm skipping the big AASL conference this year to make sure I don't take on too much as I'm terribly good at doing. But, I'll make the next one and will really be ready for that. The change of seasons is so ripe for writing, isn't it? Well done.

  5. You know I could write poems about the seasons every day. I have to force myself into other topics. I love your haiku sequence, Carol. And I'm thinking about how seasons changing can also evoke fresh grief. The first summer without...the first fall when we won't...etc. I'm sending much love your way and hoping you can find a roommate soon!

    1. Laura, seasonal poems share the beauty of the earth. Roommate issue is resolved. One of my Wonderopolis ambassadors from California is rooming with me. We just need to see if the hotel connected to the convention center is open. I like the idea of talking about other topics. This season has a remembrance that opened a discussion yesterday. We were apple picking with the family and my daughter said "I wonder if Dad was experience problems related to the cancer that was never found until the end of February-March of this year." That evoked grief for us but we were there to be with the little grands. Thank you for your love and support.

    1. Karen, I just told Laura Purdie Salas that I do have a roommate now. One of my Wonderopolis ambassador friends from California is rooming with me. We just need to see if the hotel connected to the convention center is open. Otherwise she chose a hotel just in case. Thank you for supporting Friday's blog.
