The Art of Words-#PoetryPepUp

Come join me for Aussie poet, Kat Apel's #PoetryPepUp, Day 1, The Art of Words. While I missed the Zoom meeting tonight because of the time difference, I did create a Zentangle poem. You can too by following Kat's explicit instructions. It's fun to express your creativity through the blending of art and literacy. Ready? Start by linking to Kat's blog  here and Day 1's post here.

While I am familiar with blackout poetry, I am a novice with zentangles. The zentangle poem is a form of found poetry using repetitive lines (zentagles) to frame your poem. It is an endeavor in creative play.

I started with a page from a very old book. There is no copyright date in the book but I am guessing that the book is probably from around the turn of the 19th Century by the way it is bound and the color imprint on the cover. I made a copy of the page and started my drawing. You can barely see the words I boxed because the book is so old but you can read the poem I created using the boxed words below.

fragrant messages bloom
in the midst of grass.
Sunbeams filter through foliage,
mellow and golden-
rare dignity,
proudly
set.

You can join this free week of online poetry challenge led by Central Queensland author and educator Kathryn Apel starting June 1st. Kat is hoping to build our writing muscle and spark creativity. It's pure fun.

Playing Around with Words

Have you ever been caught saying something that you think is funny or witty and it flops? As hard as I try, I just don't have the capacity to be funny so I turn to word play to bring a humorous touch to a poem. Since I try to live with a positive approach to life, I am well aware of what a toxic environment can do to the work environment.

Meet my character who needs to unscrew her prunish facial expression.

Polly Pessimist found a home
in a world of monochrome-
Colorless, faded jeans,
sour face, screaming teens.
Tried to step out for a spin.
Hit the ground, hurt her shin.
Whisked off to the hospital.
Doctor found bones so brittle.
Final thought: change your tune,
B-negative blood will be your ruin.

Doctor's Recommendation to Polly Pessimist:
Turn your life around.
Drop the droopy frown.
Play your cards right.
It's an uphill battle fight.

Words at Play Challenge for Today's Little Ditty Challenge

Thank you, Michelle H. Barnes, for bringing this challenge designed by poet Kate O'Neil to the poetry community. In the poetry playground, I can test my thoughts just for fun, bringing out the child inside.  In the DMC challenge, I tried out a pun (A pessimist's blood type is B-negative.), cliches, alliteration, and rhyme to compose a poem. I would love feedback on this poem.

Thank you also, Michelle, for being the host of Poetry Friday at your blog site this week.

As for nature, I saw my first snow of the season dusting the ground while traveling to the statewide ed conference this week.

Autumn Invites Change

Autumn is just beginning to settle in on Long Island. Evenings grow shorter and a few trees are popping color. While enjoying the first views of autumn, I decided it would be fun to play with words in ABC fashion. Take an autumn walk with me.

(The Abecedarian format introduced by my colleague, Michelle H. Barnes, continues to intrigue me as you will see below. You can see Michelle's padlet full of abecedarian poetry for September's TLD challenge here.)

Earlier this week, I wrote a post, Red Leaf Calling that started me thinking about fall, even though I could not get enough of summer. This is probably because of the summer-like weather here. If you are thinking about fall, join me for my autumn gallery, Autumn Ablaze. An official invitation for autumn offerings will be coming out soon. (You can also see a Golden Shovel format poem I wrote and photos I digitized for my blog post, Summer Fades Into Fall, on the Wonderopolis' Wonder Ground here.)

Fellow blogger-poet, Violet Nesdoly, has a Pumpkin Edition for Poetry Friday today. I am late to arrive at Violet's pumpkin patch but eager to enjoy her hospitality and ode to pumpkins.

Sunkissed Summer Gallery Unveiled

"Summertime and the livin' is easy."
-Porgy and Bess

*******************************************************************************

The last day of summer appeared without delay but my mind and spirit were still in summertime. I now reminisce about the consistent flow of sunkissed moments, each one making summer on Long Island a breathtaking experience. Summertime creates its own aura of positive vibes across the world and allows us to tell our stories through images and powerful wording.

Pause for a moment now to recollect your summertime experiences before dipping your toes into Sunkissed Summer Gallery of artistic expressions.

I invite you to Relax! Reflect! Recharge!
Engage Your Senses!

Within the spaces of this gallery, artistic designs and powerful voices from around the world blend together creating a collection of inspiring digital creations. Let's celebrate summer! Open your heart to receive each beautifully rendered image that recalls the summer of 2017.

Are you ready to stroll through the gallery's artistic expressions that flow like the roaring waves across the shore? Are you ready to feel summer touching your heart and mind? If so, let the story of summer 2017 unfold and bring you back to a relaxing time.

Let's begin the tour. I open the doors of Sunkissed Summer Gallery for your viewing pleasure.

There were ordinary summer days of carefree living

and out-of-the-ordinary moments-

life living moments to celebrate-

“If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the field has power to move you, if the simple things in nature have a message you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive.” -Eleanor Duse

There's a different type of sunbather in Florida

and a different type of singer in Louisiana.

Relax with the sounds of past decades. Listen to Chad and Jeremy sing their Summer Song live from 1964. It is the just right song for the last day of summer.

"A dark night, lightened up by thousands of glowing fireflies...
It's magical..."
-Ama H. Vanniarachhy

"Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August."
-Jenny Han, The Summer I Turned Pretty

Carol Varsalona, Chihuly Exhibit, New York Botanical Gardens

"Summer cooking implies a sense of immediacy, a capacity to capture the essence of the fleeting moment."
Elizabeth David, food writer (1913-1992)

"Summer has filled her veins with light and her heart is washed with noon." -C.S. Lewis

Pause once again to listen to summer music.

When nights darken early, summer sings its swan song but memories remain-vivid reminders of glorious sunsets.

"Oh, the summer night
Has a smile of light,
And she sits on a sapphire throne."
-Barry Cornwall

Then, like a nighttime dream, summer softly slips away and passes the baton to autumn.

In late summer, teachers wait at the door to learning.
