Have You Ever:
Faced a dead end?
Wondered where life will lead you?
Seen pathways as a bookend
squished between few alternatives?
Brushed away sticky cobwebs and
tangled knots of this and that?
Searched for waves that in sunlight ebb
that lessen the dread?

a place where fears rise
as phobias spiral into
a nebulous light of fright
on Hallow's Eve.
As phobias spiral into
mounting terror
on Hallow's Eve,
moonbeams dance in a spectral mist.
Mounting terror
rises while stars swirl on a broomstick ride.
Moonbeams dance in a spectral mist
and costumed characters ward off fiendish howls.
Rising while stars swirl on a broomstick ride,
crispcool ghouls flash their razor-sharp grins
and costumed characters ward off fiendish howls.
Who seeks refuge in garden graveyards?
Chrispcool ghouls flash their razorsharp grins
and scare the bravest lad
who seeks refuge in garden graveyards,
a place where fears R I S E.

The following golden shovel takes the strike line, mischiefs that on moonbeams ride, from Hallowe'en by Joel Benton to create a spooky poem.
Listen to Benton's reading here for a Halloween treat.
Within the dimness of night, mischiefs
rise as childish pranks spiral into that
vast expanse of fright on
Halloween. In the fractured light, moonbeams
shimmer as witches ride.

All of the above images of spooky scenes were shot while walking through my neighborhood, then digitized to create an eery effect.

Join me for the Halloween version of the Poetry Friday Roundup. I can't wait to see what poetic goodness our Denver host, Linda Baie, is serving. Below you will see the digital inspiration, One Halloween wish from Denver, Linda sent me for the "Haunted House Poemtober Journey" collection of my Abundant Autumn Gallery.
I am amazed at your neighborhood so filled with those fright-filled things, Carol. As I told you, those near me have done so much less this year! I love what you've done with your pictures, too. And FYI, I shared the Tinman today, too, was so impressed with their idea. And I enjoyed your golden shovel, just right for this pre-Halloween fun: "moonbeams
ReplyDeleteshimmer as witches ride." reminded me that the moon is glowing even tonight. I saw it on my way home from the bookstore! Happy Halloween!
Linda, I have just been wrestling with issues over moving with our realtor. For the 2nd time, we had a sale and now it has fallen through on the sides of our buyers. I write to distract myself from the stress so thank you for sharing the Tinman decoration. I will backtrack and read your post now. I am so glad that the moon is glowing by you. Our huge trees don't give us easy access to the moon. I hope you are staying healthy and not daunted by weather conditions. Happy Halloween.
DeleteYou sure have some spoooky Halloween displays in your neighborhood Carol, thanks for sharing them with us, and your "Dead End" poem at the beginning, it's spooky and good! Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeleteThere are those who stop and look at the houses with the most macabre scenes, Michelle, so perhaps the owners like the theatrical nature of their displays. For me, my walks became a journey of distraction from the stressors of the day and the photos allowed my mind to wander. Thanks for joining me at Dead End.
DeleteA truly 'spooktacular' post, Carol. I love the reoccurring line: "moonbeams dance in a spectral mist". Given that Switzerland barely celebrates Halloween and given our Covid numbers, will probably not at all celebrate it this year, I appreciate the peek into your neighbors' macabre sensibilities. Sending you "SOLD" vibes for your real estate woes. (Don't get me started on my experience with realtors).
ReplyDeleteI need your SOLD vibes, Bridget because the 2nd buyer of my house deal fell through. Not sure what is going on with this life. Is this a sign of the times? Waiting for a blue sweep on election day. Maybe the wish will be granted.
DeleteCreepy! (Shudder...)
ReplyDeleteThat is the proper response, Ruth. Thanks...
DeleteThanks for that spooky pantoum that gave me an opportunity to review the form. Great pics. This post really is creepy! Nice work! As for your first verse, Have you ever "Wondered where life will lean you?" All I can say is, "Yes.
ReplyDeleteIt is good to know that others think the same, Janice. Creepy is what I saw and eerie is what I delivered!
DeleteYour neighborhood has some seriously spooky decorations. Thanks for this creepy Halloween celebration of poems and images!
ReplyDeleteNow that my halloween galleries are completed, I wonder what Halloween will look like in my neighborhood tomorrow. Maybe the rain will stop and the sun will shine for the little ones. Enjoy the weekend, Jama.
DeleteWow! I need a walk around your neighborhood. You all have some serious love of Halloween. What a neat golden shovel. I love the strike line you chose. Sadly, this pandemic has felt like a dead end too many times.
ReplyDeleteLinda, I do love Halloween because of the fun aspect. Did I tell you that one of the house with all the gore and macabre settings added more to their huge scene? It is quite the horror show. Thanks for joining me.
DeleteYour neighborhood looks like good spooky fun. And the poems are great fun, too. Right now, there's a lot about life that seems scary--and it's good to take a moment to enjoy it. Have a spook-tacular Halloween!
ReplyDeleteI write to soften the blows of life lately, Susan. Halloween has always been a fun time in my house. Let's hope tomorrow is an enjoyable time for children.
DeleteBeware the crispcool goblins and their razorsharp grins! Thanks for the fun Halloween romp.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you enjoyed the peak at Halloween through my eyes, Buffy.
DeleteOooh - I'm glad I read this in the daytime with the lights on! Thanks so much for all the creepy fun, Carol - Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeleteRobyn, my Halloween went so beautifully with my fun not macabre seasonal decorations but today I got my first trick. The squirrels attached my beautiful pumpkin display. In all my years of putting out pumpkins (which I then use in baking), I never had a problem. Oh, Well!
DeleteYikes! What a creepy post! Perfect for the day...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary Lee. I had a wonderful Halloween with many children of all ages stopping by to wish Happy Halloween and pick a candy from the outdoor display. Nothing macabre outside my home-just pure delight...
DeleteLove your spooky RISE pairing of poem and art. Pre-election, my fears are rising, but let's hope that after Tuesday, HOPE can RISE.
ReplyDeleteHope needs to rise, Kimberly. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI love that the Coronavirus isn't dampening the Halloween spirit even if there will be fewer parties and less trick-or-treating. Your poems certainly capture that spooky spirit, Carol. BOOtifully done!
ReplyDeleteI love your opening poem today, Carol. Lately, I've been feeling kind of stuck, especially creatively. It helps to picture myself brushing away sticky cobwebs.
