Bundle Up, It's Cold Outside!

The theme for this weekend is Brrrr Cold!  Did I mention that this season in Virginia is looking like a New York winter? It is cozy indoors right now but late this afternoon snowstorm #4 or is it 5 comes my way? To prepare for another white blast, I join the Poetry Sisters' challenge, “poetry inspired by something overheard.”

Since most people are not out and about in this very cold weather, I turn to the internet for quotes and thoughts about winter in preparation for my Winter's Embrace 2022 Gallery of Artistic Expressions. I also read a mentor text by Susan Thomsen who created several found poems based on overheard conversations. Check out Susan's link here.

Bundle Up, It's Cold Outside

Baby, it's cold outside.
Snow flurries swirl around
people's legs like house cats.
Nothing burns like the cold.  It's
cold and cruel, to begin with,
but it's somehow beautiful,
sparkling like a million little suns
making our feet and fingers glow.
I wonder if the snow
loves the trees and fields
that it kisses them so gently?
Winter is the time for comfort.
Take the cold seriously.
The snow is coming!

  1. Thank you for taking part in the game! It really was tough to find "overheards," but finding them on the radio or in the newspaper counts, too! Bundle up out there!

  3. I love this found poem, Carol; those swirling house cats, glowing feet and fingers and gentle kisses. You have smoothed the overheard into a crisp, cohesive cold-coming cry.

    1. Kat, the swirling tails of house cats reminds me of my friend's cat who just loves to cuddle up to human legs with its heavy fur and twirl its tail around. My little girls are here for 3-4 days so I took a quick break. Have a great day.

  4. Oh, yes it IS cold outside. And, pretty. What a perfect time to be inside reading your found poem and sipping cocoa. I really like that image of snow swirling around people's legs like cats. My cat is right with me now making sure I don't forget his breakfast.

    1. Laura, the thought of snowflurry flakes likened to cats' tails is so delightful-soft and picturesque. I fell in love with it.

  7. Carol, nice! Just seeing the title of your post got "Baby, It's Cold Outside" going in my head. It's really cold here in CT and the snow is still coming down. I'm enjoying catching up with Poetry Friday.

    1. So we missed the Long Island snowstorm this year for the first time in 45 years. Enjoy reading PF posts and offering me a mentor text for the #PoetryPals challenge.

    1. Rose, the storm passed with minimal snow. The trees are not tipped in white so there is stark difference between the snowy lawns and the green trees. Enjoy your weekend.

  9. Stay warm - I read that the storm is supposed to be a doozy! I like your inventive take on 'overhearing', Carol. "Nothing burns like the cold." - true that!

    1. I was going over to your site when your response popped up, Bridget. Serendipity! The sun is shiny and the storm passed. Snow crunch is noted and lots of tracks but brr, it is cold!

  10. We are having an unusually cold winter in the DMV, Carol!

I love your simile: "Snow flurries swirl around/ people's legs like house cats." You capture the coziness of a light snow.

  13. It has been an odd winter in many places, Carol, hasn't it? We are back in the frigid mid-west which has had more sub-zero temps than usual and it appears more snow as well. We are taking comfort in the fact that this week ushers in a new month - hopefully, with milder weather conditions. I'll see if I have something appropriate for your winter gallery. Thanks! Stay warm!

    1. Carol, subzero temperatures sounds extremely cold. Today, I am only in one layer so a walk outside may be a welcome change. My little grandgirls are here for 3 days so I am trying to be creative with their activities. Stay warm.

  15. I love these two lines about winter and snow Carol,
"sparkling like a million little suns
making our feet and fingers glow."
It's lovely when it first falls, and I'll stop there for we're due for another snowstorm coming tonight… Thanks! ^_^
