I wake very early, wondering why? I fell asleep last night with my glasses and computer on. Was it the heat that I forgot to turn down and the dryness in the air? I can usually fall back asleep when I wake in the middle of the night but not this morning. I did set the alarm for 7:30 AM so I could be ready for my yoga class, so why am I up at 4:30 AM? Has this ever happened to you, dear reader?
Shall I call this a life interruption? Perhaps, my subconscious is thinking about the huge delivery of materials for the garage organizational system we are having installed on Friday. Maybe it is the expectancy of a Zoom presentation I am giving to a group of reading specialists tomorrow evening. I could go on and on about the laundry list of potential reasons for a break in my sleeping patterns but that would be boring for you to read. I thought I would write about creativity today but my pen takes me scribbling down another path.
I pause to reflect. Why use the term laundry list?
It's true that my laundry is spread all over the floor in the laundry room in what seems to be an endless line but that is not what I wanted to write about. I don't want to whine about a lengthy list of endless to-do items that await me this week. That would be too tedious so for fun, I research just what the idiom laundry list means. That's it! I am on a journey of self-discovery.
Research Finding - The laundry list is a term that is not new. Merriam Webster notes that back on May 9, 1938, a headline in The Illinois State Journal reads, "Girl Should Make Laundry List of Marriage Factors". Imagine that?
Does this pique your interest? The clock is ticking away and I should be getting ready for yoga so dear reader, thank you for listening to my tale of waking early.
I'm off to compose my endless to-do list for the day but first I should take care of a real task, the laundry that is piled up in an unseemly mess.
My husband used to wake up very early and also many times if we had planned to go somewhere later in the day. Your post made me smile.
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by so early (my time-not sure what time it is by you). The night before the first day of school, I would always have a difficult time sleeping. Now, I am feeling tired but I have yoga in 55 minutes so a quick nap my be my next step after yoga.
DeleteCarol, I think that sometimes our minds are so full of what in coming up and what needs to be done, consciously or subconsciously, that it wakes us up and prevents us from settling back down. The sleep cycle is broken and we need to wait for it to come around again. Or else it's just the cats tearing around the house.
ReplyDeleteLove that last line in your comment. I definitely broke my sleep cycle last night. Yoga was a great relaxer but now I am back at the desk with my laundry list. In the next room my son is tackling the washer dryer laundry list.
DeleteCarol, I wake up every day at 5AM to get myself and my kids ready to school. Your title caught my attention as I am in bed, ready to sleep, but before having my read of slices.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed my read so much!
Since we moved to VA last March, my time schedules are all mixed up so early for me is not for you. Thanks for joining me. I don't think I have met you before at Two Writing Teachers. What is your slice address?
DeleteI love how questions come to mind and send us off on searches. That finding on a girl needing to make a laundry list for marriage - good heavens! Fascinating, though. This is such a relatable post and poem, Carol. I hope you have been able to cross many things off your list today.
ReplyDeleteFran, when i think I have one item crossed off on my laundry list, a couple more pop up. I guess that is the way of life these days. I try and do bits and pieces of my list so I can keep on top of the priority items. Thanks for being supportive, Fran.
DeleteYou were up really early!!! I hope you were able to cross lots of things off your laundry list today!
ReplyDeleteI wish I was able to delete more of my laundry list than I did. It's Day 3 and I am still staring at the list. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteCarol, what a fine and fun post! I enjoyed reading about laundry lists here. Your poem is lovely, and the whole post made me smile. I hope you have a better night's sleep tonight, and that all your responsibilities work out well.
ReplyDeleteDenise, I am happy to have online conversations with you again. I wish I had a better night sleep. It is the following day and I was awakened by my house alarm at 4:30 AM but that is another story. Have a great day.
